Seditious Issues

You don’t have to use sedition laws in order to make them effective. Create the right environment and a people will begin to censor itself. The relative absence of public outrage and ridicule against the tightening of the Australian laws against sedition – outrage and ridicule loud and continuous enough to blow those laws out of the water (for surely that would have been the “Australian” thing to do? We are not a nation of self-censoring cowards?) – seems evidence enough. A few issues of Australian literary magazines more or less devoted to discussion and ridicule of this situation is pretty pathetic, really; but not to produce them, in the current circumstances, would be so much worse.
